Bible Verse:
Mark 10:21
Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto
him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever
thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt
have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross,
and follow me.
Even the Very Hairs:
Many of us have homes filled with knick-knacks and
other stuff that would benefit from a good garage
sale. We laughingly call ourselves “collectors”
and display the various souvenirs and status symbols
throughout our homes. We like things. And most of
us like to have more than one of a particular thing
just in case we need another one.
As I look around my home, I realize that I am also
a classic hoarder, which I believe is a family trait.
Yet, as time wears on I am learning to let go of
things and avoid impulse purchases.
Very
few of us remember that giving has rewards. We’re
afraid that if we give something away, we might
need it later or have to do without. However, it’s
not just objects and knick-knacks that we hold dear.
Sometimes, we get so caught up in ourselves that
we don’t share our time and talents, because
we don’t want them wasted on things that don’t
deserve our focus. We don’t give praise our
compliments, because we feel that no one is going
to build us up and we’re just as good as anyone
else, if not better. We don’t give love, because
we don’t want to open ourselves up to hurt
and the chance to be taken advantage of. We keep
what we feel belongs to us very close.
When
Jesus asked the rich young ruler to give up everything,
I’ve always believed that it was not so much
that Jesus actually required that he give up everything,
but He wanted the young man to be “willing”
to give up everything. And, just like the rich young
ruler, we don’t understand that by giving
we gain so much more. It’s time that we did
a clean sweep of our surroundings and ourselves.
